The Challenge: Preparing for the Future Through Scalable Infrastructure 

As a leading provider of freight transportation and logistics services, V. Alexander continuously seeks to enhance its services and stay ahead of evolving client needs. With business expanding and technology advancing rapidly, the company recognized an opportunity to modernize parts of its infrastructure to better support long-term scalability and efficiency. 

Their existing on-premise data center had served the organization well, but as hardware approached its natural refresh cycle and software neared end-of-support milestones, V. Alexander saw the value in evolving toward more flexible, cloud-based solutions. Additionally, years of successful client integrations—many custom-built to meet specific needs—had created a rich but complex environment. Streamlining these systems would help reduce support overhead and improve agility when onboarding new clients or adapting to market shifts. 

With a clear vision for growth and modernization, V. Alexander partnered with Provisions Group to transform its infrastructure and enhance DevOps practices, ensuring the organization could scale with confidence and deliver even greater value to its clients. 

 

Our Goal

The primary objective was to migrate V. Alexander’s systems from their on-premise data center to a cloud environment that would support performance optimization and provide the scalability needed for future growth. The solution aimed to: 

  • Transition customer traffic to a more flexible and scalable AWS cloud environment. 
  • Adopt modern technologies and DevOps best practices. 
  • Enhance system performance and reliability 
  • Standardize internal processes for efficiency and improved client onboarding. 

Provisions Group’s database administrators and systems engineers developed a comprehensive solution.

SQL Server Health Check & Optimization

We performed a detailed assessment to surface opportunities for improving system performance. Our team upgraded server hardware, streamlined legacy jobs and optimized codebase, and applied best practices to improve overall performance and security. These optimizations resulted in immediate system stability and improved reliability. 

Cloud Migration to AWS
With the on-premise infrastructure optimized, we migrated 90% of V. Alexander’s customer traffic to AWS, greatly enhancing system scalability and capacity. This transition included: 
  • Re-architecting the eAdapter, gateway, and API integrations to ensure a more seamless flow of data. 
  • Establishing separate development, testing, and production environments to ensure smooth, risk-free testing and deployment. 
  • Implementing software-based scaling and failover mechanisms to guarantee high availability and rapid recovery. 
DevOps Modernization
To improve development and deployment workflows, we: 
  • Introduced Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for automated, repeatable environment setups. 
  • Established continuous integration pipelines and automated deployment processes, significantly enhancing the speed and reliability of software updates. 
  • Enhanced System Monitoring: We integrated comprehensive logging, alerting, and dashboard systems, giving V. Alexander’s team deeper visibility into system performance. This empowered the team to resolve issues proactively, reduce development cycle times, and streamline feature rollouts. 
Process Standardization
By refining workflows and standardizing processes, we helped V. Alexander’s support team become more efficient in handling requests, reducing troubleshooting time, and improving overall system management. 

The Results

The migration to AWS delivered immediate and long-term benefits: 

  • Enhanced Scalability: The cloud environment enables V. Alexander to adjust system capacity dynamically based on client traffic, minimizing manual intervention. 
  • Stronger Security & Compliance: AWS’s shared responsibility model provides built-in protections and ensured compliance with industry certifications, such as SOCII and ISO. 
  • Improved System Reliability: "The move to AWS significantly improved database and server stability, reducing recovery times to mere minutes or hours. 
  • Optimized DevOps Processes: Standardized workflows and automated processes helps reduce support overhead, speed up client onboarding, and improve software deployment speed and consistency. 
  • Advanced Monitoring & Visibility: With enhanced logging, alerting, and dashboards, V. Alexander gained real-time insights into system performance, allowing for proactive issue resolution and minimizing disruptions. 

As a result of these enhancements, V. Alexander is well-positioned for continued growth. The next phase of the project will focus on migrating the final 10% of legacy integrations, ensuring that the system remains highly performant and scalable. 


By moving 90% of customer traffic to the cloud, V. Alexander improved system performance, security, and scalability.
